Early teenager holding a child

Father's Day. We had no special plans, but late in the afternoon we drove over to Newburgh, NY and met a family on the street celebrating in their Sunday best. The eldest member was a man who had thirteen children, ranging from forty-five to fifteen. These two were somewhere down the lineage.

  1. I especially enjoy the curve of her right side and the curve of her arm. The gold accents on the girl's braids, her sandals, and on the mother's shirt as well as her gold jewelry are also wonderful.

  2. Their matching outfits made me think they were mother and child, but the girl blushed when I asked. Still her tenderness reminded me of when I carried my younger sister on my hip at 16 and how proud I felt when people mistook me for her mother.

  3. Ah now I see that I misunderstood and didn't read the caption closely enough. Though they are sisters, you can tell she's just as protective and loving as a mother would be. The little girl is lucky to have an older sister like that to raise her, just as I was.

  4. Something about this photo is very Greek to me...perhaps it's the white and gold clothing and the baby's sandals, or maybe the crown of ivy around the girl's head...at any rate, beautiful as usual, Dmitri!

  5. Dmitri, when you take an unplanned photo like this on the street, do you ever send a copy to the subject? Do they ever even ask?

I love the look on this girl's face - she looks so capable and self-assured.

  6. Yes I do give the subject a copy. This way, even if they don't like it, I can put my face in the place again. If they do like it, it's a thank you.

  7. Jill's right- it's a wonderfully animated shot. Greek perhaps in poise (though the older sisters waist isn't wasp enough or hips full enough) but their gold decoration looks more African inspired to me. The handbills on the fence behind them and those ivy flourishes behind the older sisters head are nice touches too.

  8. When I was expecting Nicholas, but before I knew it, a friend read my Tarot. The card showed a woman with a crown of myrtle -- the symbol of fertility.

Taken on Father's Day, a male presence represented by the rap star posted on plywood.
