Niko and Alex

I was in the wine shop and caught site of Caroline outside waiving and pointing to this couple standing in line in the street for a burrito. "It's all right, you remind me of my parents", Alex said, when Caroline was offering our names and e-mail and showing them cards of my work to reassure them they weren't going to be kidnapped.

I always worry a bit when it is plainly hopeless doing the shot where the subject is standing and have to ask them to come round the corner with me because I have found a good background there. But in this case the first shots around the corner were not too good. They were done in a hurry because I thought they wanted to eat their lunch. But glancing to the other side of the street I saw these steps and liked it much more, and they said they were happy to take as long as I needed and wait for their food.

  1. The irony -- they remind me of being young and free and artistic. Alex had a wonderful sketchbook, Niko was taking a break from school to be a musician.

  2. i felt fairly complimented to be picked out of the bedford avenue crowd with so many hip young people around. I am a lover and supporter of art of all mediums and was happy to be a subject for Kasterine. - alex

  3. This reminds me of being young, as well. Looking at beautiful people being tender and intimate with each other and never being a part of it myself.

  4. Try to not read too much into photos. They arranged themselves this way after a bit of guidance from Dmitri. In the earlier photos across the street they were more formal, standing apart.

  5. Reactions to art are often similar to reactions to Rorsarch tests, in that they reveal more about the mental grooves and limitations of the person observing and interpreting the work of art than they do about the work itself. I apologize for foisting my neuroses upon an innocent photograph which didn't ask to be sprayed with my grotesquely self-pitying psychobabble.

  6. Something about this photograph is like an analytic cubist painting to me...I suppose it has to do with the shallow background, the way the wall, door, and chalk half-circle form geometric shapes, and the limited, earth-tone palette. Beautiful!
