Solemn moment

More that Nikon shutters are as smooth as silk than my hand rock steady, but I believe that this photograph was taken at 1/5th of a second. Diner is a marvelous place where the waitress sits or crouches at your table and reels off the menu from memory and writes it at the same time on the paper tablecloth. Wine, (Julianénas out of a ten litre box, yes box, decanted into litre bottles) pasta and chocolate cake, out of this world. And a couple, heads together, her hand holding his ear. Why? Maybe just trying to concentrate on who owes what for the dinner.

  1. Love it Dmitri! It looks like such a tender moment but there's some underlying intensity..what is it-"Hurry & finish so we can go home and release our passion" or is he sad about something and she's comforting him....hmmm

  3. I think they may be praying. Perhaps one of them delivered some bad news to the other and they're both digesting it (or trying to). Her hand on his ear is such an intimate connection. She hasn't touched her wine. I wonder what that means. This is a beautiful moment in time captured.

  4. Oh this is just beautiful, Dmitri. I didn't see this couple at Diner, but I love how her face is illuminated. It really does look almost like a religious experience here.

This photograph really captured the light well that night. It was such a beautiful time, and I was happy to spend it with you, Caroline, and Nicholas!

  5. Has been far too long since I've visited....but once i did, i kept coming back to this beautiful one...just noticed that the man seems to be looking at an illuminated iphone type screen...and then there's that bit of light shining off of the old-school-looking tile on the column...so....the up-to-the-minute + the seems-to-have-been-there forever...but, as you know better than anyone - all light being lovely.

And as you note in your email update this month, the summer is fading fast...brings a change in mindset and style ...creeps up on me every year as if it's the first time . . .

  7. I think you're right Dmitri. I think they're just trying to figure out the check.

  8. hmmm.... am now rethinking the light....that perhaps the illuminated screen is not some sleek, updated version of what we are seeing bouncing off the tiles...but rather that which is distracting the man from the luminous beauty sitting across from him - as she reaches out with her simple, but beautiful gesture, he checks some inane friend's Facebook status - perhaps alerting the world with the earth-shattering news that said "friend" is seriously contemplating getting a haircut Tuesday...
