Hands on Hips 1

The Cold Spring restaurant, Riverview, is run by Jimmy. Actually it's a partnership with his wife. This woman is Jimmy's mother. He is a man who has inherited his mother's strength and presence. When I saw her as I walked by she was gardening with her grand-daughter. But I knew at once that I must take her alone. She planted her feet astride, put her hands on her hips and said, "Like this?" I said, "Exactly like that."

  1. When I first looked I was immediately reminded of the series Diane Arbus did of figures on lawns. Less disturbing of course, but a similar spatial disparity of figure and ground. On a personal note, the way she's dressed is nearly exactly the way my Mom dressed 90% of the time.

  2. This lady just looks so pleased.

I really enjoy when you post pictures on particular themes, Dmitri. It's fascinating to see how one particular compositional element can unite things.
